Serious Space for Serious Business

Apr 16, 2012 - Dallas, TX

Professional builders, remodelers and numerous other residential construction professionals congregated March 23 - 24 inside the Rhode Island Convention Center in downtown Providence, Rhode Island to attend JLC LIVE.  With space at a premium, the 2012 New England event provided passionate attendees with even more exhibits and interactive feature areas.  JLC LIVE, New England’s most anticipated annual professional construction event, delivered 208 exhibiting companies, 55,604 total square feet of manufacturer displays and live education ( 7% increase over 2011) and a total verified attendance of 7,302 ( 5% increase over 2011).

Product knowledge and education are the core reason attendees take time to come to JLC LIVE and 2012 delivered.  “I always find a new discovery.  Every year I put a higher budget for tools to spend at JLC,” stated Jose DeJuan of DeJuan Construction in Connecticut.

Enthusiasm and exuberance radiated from attendees and exhibiting companies alike both onsite and from comments received post-show, substantiating news reports and singular exchanges of increased residential construction activity in the New England region:

“….It’s good to be in the company of fellow tradesmen that care enough about their craft to  take the time to attend a show like this.  Anyone who attends this show is many miles ahead of  probably 90% of their competition,” shared Richard Flynn of Richard Flynn Carpentry.

“This is the biggest little show in the nation for reaching users.  We do a lot of shows, but this is probably the busiest show we do, by far, as far as attendee and floor traffic,” shared Joel Allen with Stiletto Titanium Tools.

Bob Durant of Southern Vermont Home and Repair attended for the first time in 2012.  “It was my first show [and] I thought it was very helpful.  Looking forward to attending next year.”

In an email after the show, Chris Fagan, Sales Manager for DCI Products shared “We could not have been happier with this year’s JLC LIVE show in Providence.  In addition to the sheer number of contractors and industry professionals, the great questions and feedback we get from them are priceless for us as a manufacturer.  It is by far the best show we do every year.”

Working hand-in-hand with the new products and suppliers are JLC LIVE’s signature Building Clinics.  The Building Clinics provide multiple dimensions of interaction from inspecting the new products up close to seeing them used in a real-world jobsite application.

The show featured a total of nine Building Clinics, two of which were new to the lineup: Durable Siding and Trim Details (sponsored by LP Building Products); and Lead Paint: Tools, Testing and Compliance.  Returning Building Clinics included: Frame and Finish (sponsored by Huber Engineered Woods); Drywall Trade Secrets; Exterior Living Designed to Last (sponsored by AZEK Building Products, Inc.); Craft of Stairbuilding; Deck Construction Technology.   Three of the nine clinics comprised the Building Performance Hub: Moisture Management Principles; Residential Green Building Techniques and Building Performance Technology.  The Premier Sponsor of the 2012 event was Festool; the Official Material Supplier was Riverhead Building Supply Corp. and the Official Housewrap Supplier was Parksite Inc.

All Building Clinics were presented by notable industry specialists: Greg Burnet, Chris Zorzy, Gary Katz, Mike Sloggatt, Tom Brewer, Myron Ferguson, Frank Caputo, Jed Dixon, Mike Guertin, Rick Arnold, Bill Robinson, Mark Clement, Kurt Filan and Adam Fielder.

“We find that it is one of the best trade shows for us to expose our product to the end users: the builders, the contractors, and we even see some of the architectural community attend this show.  The attendance is overwhelming every time we’ve been here for the last ten years,” stated David Brennan with AZEK Building Products Inc..

The Propane Innovation Pavilion also returned to JLC LIVE in 2012.  This unique area gave builders and remodelers an inside look at the latest products, services and technologies for propane in residential construction as well as a destination for having questions answered directly from propane experts.  The Propane Innovation Pavilion was presented by: Propane Education & Research Council; Rinnai America, Kohler Power Systems, Eco Power C.H.P. and Propane Gas Association of New England.

In addition to the Building Clinics and the Propane Innovation Pavilion, five Exhibitor Demonstrations took place for the duration of the event.  These demonstration areas were sponsored by Andersen Windows and Doors, Grace, James Hardie Building Products, Therma-Tru Doors and Marvin and Integrity Windows and Doors.

Outside of the Exhibit Hall, JLC LIVE offered attendees a choice of 50+ sessions in a four-day conference program focused on real-world construction and business education.  Sessions offered a wide range of relevant topics for residential building or residential remodeling firms.

Peer-to-peer networking – both during the show and after hours – is tradition at JLC LIVE.  Beginning with the Thursday Conference Happy Hour, conference attendees, speakers and magazine editors gathered at the Courtyard to mix and mingle.  Then after opening day on Friday, an energized crowd enjoyed live music from “The Disasters” (all long-time JLC attendees) at the “Rock and Blues” Welcome Party.  During the course of the evening, multiple raffle winners walked away with new tools, technical books and other prizes.  Finally, on Saturday beginning at 12 noon, JLC LIVE provided complimentary beer in the exhibit hall giving professionals in attendance one more reason to gather and share stories.  The show wrapped Saturday afternoon with many exhibitors continuing to welcome prospective customers into their booths.

“It's an amazing opportunity to connect with peers, friends and industry insiders and to share a meal and a laugh.  Wouldn't miss it!” stated Bob Alsop of B&D Builders in Vermont.

In 2012, a number of technological conveniences were introduced, including a texting program and an official mobile app.  Attendees who opted in for the texting program received quick, short messages about key onsite events like the Welcome Party of onsite prize drawings.  The official JLC LIVE mobile app was an interactive version of the show program accessible at all times and allowed attendees to access detailed information about the show, the venue, exhibiting companies, conference sessions and networking events both before and during the show.  Although the texting program only occurred for a short time period, the official JLC LIVE app can reference 2012 show information until the 2013 app is available.  The app was developed for iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry platforms.

Mark your calendars for JLC LIVE New England 2013 taking place at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI.  The Conference will run March 20-23, 2013 and the Exhibit Hall will be open March 22-23, 2013.  JLC LIVE is officially presented by the Journal of Light Construction, Remodeling Magazine and Tools of the Trade.  For more information about JLC LIVE, related industry events or securing booth space at the 2013 event, please visit or call 800.471.2404.
